It all started in my supplement store in Wollongong in 2001. I grabbed a bucket of protein powder from the shelf and tried to mix it (in a shaker) with cold water and even hot water (boiling even). There was no way I could get it to dissolve. Yet, on the label it had 'mixes easily with a spoon' (are you kidding – I almost dislocated my wrist from the wild shaking). There was no way in the world I was going to drink it.

I decided to do some intensive research into protein powders and what I discovered shocked and amazed me. I found that some protein powders weren’t what they were supposed to be. Some were made not from whey (the richest protein source) but from cheaper ingredients derived from rice and wheat. Some were full of sugar that could bloat you or give you acne. And with others, there were just big doubts about the quality. It was hard to work out where and under what conditions they were made. They seemed to be made from the lowest price to produce the biggest profit for the manufacturer.

I spent a lot of time talking to customers about the various brands of protein powder they were using and what it was doing for them...or not doing. Some guys swore by one product, some guys another. But when all was said and done, I realised no-one felt that what they were using was really doing the job. The supplement industry is so full of confusing marketing terms designed to amaze people. I started having doubts about the quality of protein powders and under what conditions they were made.

After years of trying to cleanse the protein supplement image and telling people about the benefits of protein powder (like helping improve the quality of life) as well as the risks (the real challenge is to use protein powder properly), I often felt I was getting no closer to my aim of helping people make a more healthy decision regarding the supplements they were buying. I got really upset.

I realized if I want the absolute best formulations for my customers and my two boys, I need to just create my own. I hired the best team of experts – and gave them a simple brief:

‘Create excellent products, different to anything that is out there. Source the finest and purest ingredients from Australia where possible to minimise the deterioration and contamination that may occur in transport. Find a manufacturer to produce the powder under the most rigid and hygienic conditions. I want the products produced in small batches to ensure the highest quality, consistency and freshness. I insist on meticulous tracking and auditing of records. I want a third party independent test for each product for total protein and amino acid percentage. I want my protein powders tasting good.'

I then hired a graphic designer – and gave him a simple brief:

‘Create labels to wrap around the high quality products – labelling which is different and authentic to anything else out there. I do not want clever marketing and advertising wrapped around the products that doesn’t tell the truth.'

Octane and VitaminWhey were born.

We invent our own products. We make them fresh and we tell you when they were made. I don’t believe in compromises or shortcuts. My products perform at least as good as or better than the best mainstream brand of protein powders. We source premium whey exclusively from Australia’s world class suppliers. Our other ingredients come from food suppliers who are the international leaders in their field. We only offer premium quality products through the most outstanding customer service.

Starting a business and seeing it through could never happen without my customers support, my enthusiastic staff and love and encouragement of my family. It was always my dream to create recipes that I know will be safe for my children’s delicate bodies and safe for my customers.

I hope you enjoy drinking these powders as much as I have enjoyed researching and developing them.
